Maharashtra’s first-of-its-kind microbrewery, Doolally Handcrafted Beers, at Pune’s Corinthians Club concluded its first beer tournament on a high note. Officially titled Beer Olympics and conducted by local event management outfit Bombay Elektrik Project, the tournament saw 30 teams participate through the day, with 60 per cent from Mumbai itself. While Pune-based team ‘Why SUD We Have All The Fun’ won the Golden prize — Rs 10,000 worth of beer at the microbrewery, Mumbai’s ‘Khandala Beer Drinkers Association’ came in second.
Comprising a bunch of 22-year-old engineering students at Pune’s Army Institute of Technology (AIT), Prashant Tomar of the winning team mentions, “Our final practical exams got over in the afternoon and we were looking for a way to celebrate. We found out about the beer tournament at the microbrewery and just decided to take part. Though this was the first time we’ve ever participated in such an event, we were familiar with some games like Beer Pong, which is popular in our college hostel,” he says.
On the other hand, KBDA, the runner-up team from Mumbai — in the 23-31 years age bracket — had one of its members break a record of sorts in the 500ml Beer Chugg game. “I drank the beer (Doolally’s Premium 36 lager) in five seconds,” mentions Melvin Dsouza. “That’s because it was light and went down easily.” Tomar from the winning team adds, “We were surprised that Arjun from our group could chug the 500ml pint in seven seconds. He’s otherwise such a thin and lanky fellow, you’d never guess he could do that.”
Record to reckon with
But according to Suketu Talekar, co-founder of the microbrewery, the real record to compete with would be that of the tournament’s chairman, a certain Dharmesh Gandhi from Mumbai. “He drank over 52 pints (573ml) in an eight-hour period at our Oktoberfest event last year. I haven’t seen anyone break that record. He also downed a two-litre pitcher of our Apple Cider in a single shot.”
Originally, Talekar thought of having the Doolally team time itself at the games and use the figures as benchmarks. “But after looking at the scores, I’m so glad we didn’t put our figures up. We saved ourselves from much embarrassment,” he laughs.
