So what if Mallika Sherawat doesn’t have too many Bollywood films in her kitty? She still continues to be the toast of Hollywood. On February 25, she was at the pre-Oscar party, rubbing shoulders with a "nice" Halle Berry and a "dreamy" Adrien Brody. Then, at the 83rd Academy Awards, she shimmered on the red carpet, and later, was spotted at the Governor’s Ball and Sir Elton John’s after-party.
Her desi glitter reportedly caught the eye of Nicole Kidman, who told her she looked "stunning", and Elton John, who described her as "divine". She also met Oscar winner Jamie Foxx (Best Actor, Ray) who invited her over to his 40-acre ranch in Los Angeles for an evening with a few close friends.
Mallika asserts that the American actor, singer, stand-up comedian and talk show host is one of the one of the most talented people. "As a fellow performer, he's an inspiration. He can act, sing, dance, do comedy and drama, and he does it all brilliantly," she says, after watching the 2010 Grammy winner lay down the tracks for his upcoming album that is a follow-up to Best Night Of My Life. "I was delighted to spend time with Jamie on a few occasions and honoured to witness his talent when he recorded the vocals."
In her romantic comedy, Love, Barack—The Politics Of Love, Mallika plays Aretha Gupta, loosely modelled on California’s Attorney General, Kamla Harris. "I loved the script. It’s election time and Aretha, the Democratic campaign organiser, falls in love with her Afro-American Republican counterpart," laughs Mallika whose co-stars in the film include Loretta Devine (Dreamgirls), Oscar nominee Ruby Dee (American Gangster), Brian White (Stomp The Yard, I Can Do Bad All By Myself), Gerry Bednob (40 Yr Old Virgin) and American President Barack Obama’s double.
The film was apparently inspired by the many campaign romances that sprung around the Presidential win, which experts speculate, resulted in an Obama baby boom. A rough cut of the film is making the rounds of Hollywood’s trade circles. It’s got a following on Facebook and Mallika’s now-famous car wash scene has got over 1000 hits on YouTube.
The film has also sparked off an interest in Foxx, an active politico, who has requested her for a private screening of the film. Mallika is delighted. "Jamie was a supporter of President Obama during his historic campaign and recently hosted a night of music at the White House. I'm excited for him to see Love, Barack."
Who’s next? President Obama himself? "I hope he’ll be there at the premiere too," She laughs. "Nothing is impossible!"
* Says she met Johnny Depp, who told her he was looking forward to watching the Hisss trailer.
* Her “stellar” role with Jackie Chan in The Myth was a blink-and-miss cameo.
* She called Salma Hayek her “new-friend” on Twitter but the Desperado actor said she only met Mallika briefly at Cannes.
