Comic book giants, Marvel Comics, which owns popular superhero properties like Spiderman, Iron Man, X Men, The Hulk and Fantastic Four, has tied up with UTV Action to promote their movies in India.
The brand that entered the Indian market with their Spacetoons distribution banner last year, has taken another step in establishing themselves in the space. Under the alliance, UTV Action will promote one Marvel movie every month, while a slot every Thursday will be dedicated to superhero movies.
But Sameer Ganpathy, channel head, UTV Action, admits that in the near future, the channel is looking at taking the association forward in the distribution space too. “We’ve just entered an association now. But we want to own the action space in India, and may release and distribute Marvel movies sometime in the future,” Ganpathy says.
Missed out on Iron Man
The channel couldn’t involve itself with Marvel’s last Indian release, Iron Man, because it happened before the association. It is actively looking at other opportunities to work together, though the tie-up is currently limited to promotional activities.
Says Rajiv Sangari, CEO and MD of Kids Animation India, which had launched the Indian edition of Marvel Adventure Comics, “We will be promoting UTV Action’s Movie of the Month on the back of every issue. In turn, UTV Action will promote the upcoming issue’s story every month on the channel.”
Ganpathy also reveals that a “major ground activity” is lined up for July, but didn’t give any further details at the time.
This month, UTV Action will be showcasing Nicholas Cage-starrer Ghost Rider, as their ‘Movie of the Month’ on May 30, and will be promoting Marvel Adventures’ Special Issue of Spiderman, through the month.
