In spite of the rains that almost brought Mumbai to a standstill on Monday, Bollywood came out to attend and walk the ramp at Manish Malhotra’s fashion show to aid Shabana Azmi’s NGO the Mijwan Welfare Society. It was the two ladies, Nita Ambani and pugilist Mary Kom, both superstars in their own right, who stole the show as they walked the ramp. Nita took to the runway purely because it is a charity event and introduced the show, while Mary Kom showed support for Shabana’s cause while fulfilling her childhood dream of being a model.
Mary Kom on going from the ring to the ramp
Were you nervous?
I was scared about things like wardrobe malfunction or stumbling and falling. I’ve seen it happen on TV. So, I was little tense when I walked alone in the first round. In the end, I was confident when we all walked together.
Is there anything common between the boxing ring and the ramp?
What’s common is the cheering crowd. Also, I was just as nervous when I made my debut as a boxer.
So, will you walk the ramp again?
I will, provided I’m convinced about the cause.
We hear you love dressing up?
When I was a child, we were very poor, so I didn’t get to live my dream of wearing good clothes. Christmas was the only time my siblings and I would get new clothes and black shoes. Every time we would ask mom about new clothes, she would tell us that if we study hard, everything else will follow.
What was your first reaction on being asked to walk the ramp?
I was surprised, because I thought only beautiful people walk the ramp. But I liked what Shabana was doing for the poor weavers. Even I come from a poor background. So I took it up.
How did your husband Onler react to your ramp début?
He thought I looked very pretty. When he saw all the movie stars, he said that if I dressed like them, I would also look like a movie star.
Did you meet the Bollywood actors at the event?
Yes, everyone present there, except Priyanka Chopra. They all complimented me on my look and congratulated me for my Olympics medal. I like them a lot.
