Why do we really need holidays? Is it just to kick back and forget the world exists? To me, it’s a chance to unwind and revamp myself for a new attack on life.
I made a quick trip to Singapore to indulge in food, massage therapy and plenty of retail therapy. I also walked the greyest of markets, getting the best deals on iPads and accessories, thus putting my haggling powers to the test. It felt like I was back in Heera Panna when I discovered a store that sold testers of every perfume at half the price.
I emerged from the darkness of the grey markets to the blinding lights of Gucci, Versace and Valentino. To serve as a foil to my street shopping was a trip to Louis Vuitton store to pick up a bag for a friend. The tax refund on it was enough to cover my combined shopping bills!
Universal Studios though was the highlight of my trip — from Shrek to the street dancers on the Hollywood Boulevard, the experience had me wishing that Planet Bollywood could create its own version with a Chaiyya Chaiyya ride and photo-ops with Sheila and Munni.
I was off my diet and neck deep in Singaporean noodles and fly-lice. The Indian influence in Singapore is pretty amazing, with everyone speaking fluent Tamil. I even had my fill of ‘pratas’ and realised how popular Indian food is.
I’m becoming quite a connoisseur of wellness and massage therapies. My retreat to Indonesia put me in the hands of a chatty masseuse who was thrilled with my job. She bragged about her brush with Kareena and Saif but recalled her being reserved, offering nothing but a thank you at the end. For me, the tranquil setting and aromatic oils were a pleasant change from the ‘oily oil’ (olive oil) maalish I get offered by my maushi.
It was soon time to head back and get back to business. Armed with slideshows on my iPad and cheap perfumes, I’m now all set for my south film meetings this week.
