During the ’80s they were one of the most sought after couples on screen. Now, Mithun Chakraborty and Ranjita are back together in Ashu Trikha’s untitled mature love story to be produced by Naveen Tak.
In fact, they were first signed for another film called Shatir, a thriller, but as Trikha, the maker of films like Deewaanapan, Sheesha and Alag says, “That had to be pushed back for some reasons so we are starting the love story first.”
The film is a mature love story where Mithun plays a 60-year-old man and Ranjita is in her ’50s. Why the two together, we ask Trikha?
“One of the reasons is that they have worked together a lot, and we could recreate their old magic. There is an audience which has seen them together and we want to give them another opportunity,” says the filmmaker.
The shooting for the film begins from June 15 in Dalhousie and “I hope to complete it by August,” adds Tak.
Mithun and Ranjita have starred in a lot of films together including Surakksha, Tarana, Hum Se Badkar Kaun and Ghar Ek Mandir, to mention a few.
When HT City caught up with Chakraborty and Ranjita, both seemed excited though the latter was a bit reserved.
“I have not been in touch with the industry for over 15 years. Let’s see if the audience likes us together or not,” says Ranjita. But she does have a lot to say about Chakraborty.
“We have been friends for years, we were in FTII together and he is such a good human being,” she says.
Chakraborty says simply, “She is my lucky mascot.”
What about his favourite film with Ranjita? "It has to be Tarana,” he says.
The film, Trikha informs, will have two love stories running parallel — one involving Chakraborty and Ranjita and the other featuring a young couple.
We have had several successful pairs reuniting on screen of late — Amitabh Bachchan-Hema Malini, Rishi Kapoor-Dimple Kapadia, Naseeruddin Shah-Shabana Azmi and now Mithun-Ranjita seem to be joining the trend.
