The cultural exchange between independent musicians and Bollywood continues to get richer by the day. The latest one is the band Agnee, which is composing the music for two upcoming films.

The band’s vocalist, Mohan Kannan, tells us that one of the films is a romantic thriller. "Koco (the band’s guitarist) has even acted in it and he is playing a Goan taxiwalla," he says.

The other film is a political satire, which the vocalist says 'just happened' to them. "We saw it in March last year and loved it. The music was done after the film was made. We haven’t charged a fee for composing it," says Kannan about the three-song soundtrack.

The most interesting song on the album is themed around the elections, for which they collaborated with veteran band Indian Ocean. "It was a great experience. We were feeding off each other’s energy," says Kannan.

Another song, titled Om shanti om, is a tribute to Shah Rukh Khan. Kannan describes it as a "bhajan-qawwali about a goat and how he becomes a superstar".

Agnee is also working on an album, for which they are reinventing popular tunes from the bygone era, like Gore gore and Inteha ho gayi.

Kannan says, "We have recomposed the songs and improvised the tunes. We hope people will like it, because usually it’s difficult for fans to appreciate old tunes packaged differently."
