The festival season across city campuses is set to begin with a classical touch.

St Xavier’s College is hosting Janfest on January 25 and 26 and it will be a unique celebration of fusion music. Organised by the college’s Indian Music Group that strives to preserve and promote the country’s musical heritage, the two-day festival will witness performances by exponents of myriad dance forms and music genres.

While the previous editions have seen maestros like Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pt Shivkumar Sharma, Pt Ajoy Chakraborty, Ustad Rashid Khan and Rahul Sharma perform, this year, Janfest will play host to Gino Banks (drums), Pt Birju Maharaj (Kathak), Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia (flute), Kaushiki Chakrabarty (vocals), Rakesh Chaurasia (flute) and more.

"Janfest turns 40 this year and the audience will have something unique to look forward to when Pt Birju Maharaj, Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia and Kaushiki Chakrabarty will collaborate over a performance,” says Akshay Shetty, Indian Music Group, St Xavier’s College.

Talking about the act, Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia says, "We have earlier performed a similar concert in Kolkata but this will be our first collaboration in Mumbai. I think Birju Maharaj is our greatest Kathak icon and has received global recognition. Kaushiki is a talented young artiste. With two old artistes, I think she will add a youthful touch to our act."

With a footfall of 2,000 people per performance, the festival this year will experiment with fusion acts as well.
