Ed Sheeran is on top of his game right now. The 23-year-old singer’s second album, X, recently completed the fifth consecutive week at No 1 on the UK’s Official Albums Chart.

It has now become the longest running Number 1 album of the year to date. But breaking records ain’t something extraordinary for the ‘Give me love’ hitmaker, as earlier last month, Sheeran became the first artiste to see all of his album’s tracks in the Official Singles Chart Top 100. Here’s what the English singer-songwriter has to say.

Tell us about your recent album.
It took me a lot of time to put X together. I really tried to perfect it. There was a lot of hype around me during my previous album in terms of building fan base and radio, and I was releasing stuff so often that X just followed in quick succession. The album consists of songs about drunken regret and comedowns from certain things.

Both your albums have been really successful. How do you handle the fame?
I am pretty much the same. I still read all the reviews, but I used to read the bad ones and I guess it didn’t go down well at the time. Now, I’ve gone through all that and come out from the other side having sold a lot of the first album (titled +; 2011) off the back of having bad reviews.

There has been a lot of buzz about you dating Taylor Swift. What’s your take on that?
Taylor’s one of those people whom if you piss off, she would write a song about you, it’s not good news for you. I’ve never dated her. I’ve dated a few singers, though.

What kind of music do you listen to?
I quite like all the musical trends because they go in and out, even something like EDM, which I wasn’t a big fan of to begin with. The first EDM song that I loved was ‘I’m not alone’ by Calvin Harris. I really started digging it when Martin Garrix and Avicii started doing stuff.

Do you still consume alcohol?
I used to drink heavily. I came up in pubs and clubs, where you get paid in alcohol. And, as soon as I signed a record deal, I thought: I just need to focus. The day I started drinking again was the day the album sold a million copies, and I was like: ‘Right, done. Back to normal’.

Tell us about your upcoming song with DJ Martin Garrix.
We’ve almost completed our duet. We are just tweaking.
