I could not have known my future husband better. We lived in the same locality and being my brother’s friend, he had been visiting my house for many years. We fell in love and though our parents were opposed to the match, we got married in an Arya Samaj mandir.
He had the habit of taking pictures and making videos of me when I was nude. I felt uncomfortable and often told him to delete those… sometimes discreetly deleted them myself. But he used to say that the pictures are just for us to see and that he will delete them after a while. If I ever questioned him, he would say, “Don’t you have faith in me? We are not merely girlfriend-boyfriend, we are husband and wife.”
After a few months, I noticed a change in his behaviour and he started demanding dowry. He even started beating me up badly. Then, some common friends told me that he had married another woman in Kanpur. When I confronted him, he beat me and said “Tu laayegi 20 lakh aur car? Free mein aake chipak gayi hai mere jaise engineer ke saath. Zyaada gadbad karegi to saari photos net pe daal doonga aur MMS bana doonga. (Bring Rs 20 lakh and a car. You can’t marry an engineer like me for free. If you’ll refuse, I shall post your pics on the net and circulate MMSs)
There was no shortage of money. He is a software engineer in a reputed firm, and I told him that with my degree in classical music, I will find a job soon, but he didn’t listen and kept blackmailing and threatening me. Last week, I went to the nearby police station and filed a complaint. The police caught him while he was on a train, on way to Kanpur. He is in jail now. I don’t know what will happen to my life now, but one lesson that I feel every girl should learn is never let anyone click your pictures in the nude just because you are in love. If a husband can do this to his wife, you can’t trust anyone.
