"My parents liked her, showed me her photograph and I agreed to meet her," says actor Vivek Oberoi, of his fiancée Priyanka, the daughter of danseuse Nandini Alva and late Janata Dal (U) leader, Dr Jeevaraj Alva.
Oberoi reveals he was surprised when, during a recent holiday to celebrate his parents’ wedding anniversary, his father Suresh and mother Yashodara Oberoi brought up the topic. After he gave the nod, his parents went to meet Priyanka in Bengaluru.
A graduate with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Royal Holloway, University of London, Alva went to the Martha Graham School of Dance in New York. She is also trained in Bharatanatyam, Kathak and classical music.
Oberoi says, “I had been single for a long time and was looking for the right person. Priyanka and I connected instantly.”
On being asked to elaborate on what he liked about Alva, Oberoi replies that they have a lot in common: “Both our grandfathers were freedom fighters and that patriotism has also seeped into us. Apart from being a humanitarian and doing social work with NGOs, she’s also very environmentally conscious and loves animals. At the same time, she is spiritual and cultured…” he trails off, adding that her ‘real’ beauty lies in her simplicity.
No link-ups please!
While he concedes that his fiancée has seen his films, Oberoi asserts that they connected beyond his profession. Hoping that he’ll be spared of the link-ups henceforth, the soon-to-be groom says that movies didn’t figure much in their conversations.
“Although she’s aware of what I do for a living and the professional hazards that come with it, she related to me for the person that I am. I’m thankful to God for bringing her in to my life,” he says.
When probed about the wedding celebrations and honeymoon plans, Oberoi clamps up: “We’ve just fixed the date
(October 29)... I’ll tell you the details as and when the programme is finalised. All I can say for now is that Priyanka is such an amazing person that I feel my prayers have been answered.”
