As politician Varun Gandhi, 31, ties the knot with graphic designer Yamini Roy on March 6 in Varanasi, the couple’s nuptials are set to hark back to traditions followed by the Gandhi family for decades, with Yamini and her to-be mother-in-law, MP Maneka Gandhi, wearing heirloom Benarasi saris. “The wedding ceremony is very simple,” says Yamini, who weds the Pilibhit MP at the Shri Kashi Kaamkotishwar Temple. The reception will take place in Delhi on March 8 at Hotel Ashok.
For the wedding, Yamini will wear a rose pink, brocade Benarasi sari which Varun’s grandmom Indira Gandhi had gifted to Maneka on her wedding. “It’s a beautiful sari and it’s part of Varun’s family legacy so she’s very happy about wearing it,” says a close friend of the bride, wishing not to be named.
Maneka, too, will wear a sari with a historical legacy. “The sari she’s wearing is 71 years old, and was woven by Nehru in 1940, in prison. It’s a beautiful rose pink colour, and Maneka had worn it for her wedding,” says designer Madhu Jain, who is restoring the sari. At the reception, Varun will wear a Rohit Bal ensemble, while Yamini will wear a 100-year-old Benarasi sari which belonged to Kamala Nehru. Maneka will wear a sari with the Nandi bull motif. “She is fond of animals, so we went with this motif,” says Jain. Over 1200 people are expected at the event.
