When the trailers of Mission Impossible IV: Ghost Protocol went on air earlier this month, Indians couldn’t wait to see it — there’s our very own Anil Kapoor in the December release, after all. But no, he was nowhere to be seen. Then came the second hope — the just released promo of Irrfan Khan starrer, The Amazing Spider-Man, which opens next year. But he, too, is missing from the footage. This, inspite of the fact that both actors play an important role in their respective Hollywood movies.
“Anil and Irrfan have clearly been clearly sidelined ... it is very difficult for Bollywood actors to make their own zone in Hollywood,” says trade analyst Vikas Mohan. Trade pundit Taran Adarsh says, “Let’s face it, in the international arena, the focus will be on Tom Cruise and Spider-Man rather than other actors.”
The Indian distributors of Spider-Man, however, say it is too early to jump to a conclusion. “This is the early teaser, focussed more on the story behind how Spider-Man was created. More details including the look of both villains — The Lizard and Van Adder (Khan) — can be expected in forthcoming trailers,” says a spokesperson for Sony Pictures. Both Kapoor and Khan were unavailable for comment.
