A day after Sooraj Pancholi was granted bail in the case accusing him of abetting actor Jiah Khan’s suicide, his parents, actor-couple Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab are relieved.

“I could finally sleep peacefully last night. The last 24 days (that Sooraj spent in jail) have been like an agnipariksha for me and my family. I hardly slept these three weeks. I prayed at almost every temple and dargah. You can’t imagine how happy I am that my bachcha will finally come home. I know that he is innocent and I am not saying this just because he is my son... I know him more than anyone else. He has never even answered me back,” says Wahab.

The Bombay High Court granted bail to 22-year-old Sooraj on a surety of Rs 50,000, observing that he cannot be solely held responsible for the ‘impulsive’ act of suicide committed by Jiah. Jiah and Sooraj were in a relationship and Jiah’s mother, Rabbiya Khan has alleged that it was Sooraj’s cruelty that led her daughter to take her life.

“Whatever happened is unfortunate and I feel very bad for Jiah. But the fact is that it is God who decides birth and death and no one else. Because Sooraj was in her life, the focus came on Sooraj, had there been some other person, the focus would have been on him. I pray to God to give strength to Rabbiyaji and her family. I can understand her pain as she has lost a daughter,” adds Wahab.

Has she met Rabbiya? “I have only met her once and that everyone is aware of. But if Rabbiya wants to meet me I am always there for her. Otherwise koi matlab nahi hai Rabbiya se baat karne ka (There is no point talking to Rabiyya).”

She adds, “I know that this incident and the experience will make Sooraj a stronger and mature person.”
