On January 22, actress and Bharatnatyam dancer Gracy Singh will hold a classical Odissi dance performance as part of the Dance Odyssey concert at the Ravindra Natya Mandir, Prabhadevi.
The concert is a tribute to Bollywood’s many actress-dancers. Organised by Vaishnovi Kala Kshetra, the show presents a combination of classical Odissi dance moves choreographed to dance numbers of the silver screen across the ages.
Apart from Singh's performance, the show, choreographed by Asha Nambiar, will also feature performances to songs picturised on actresses Madhubala, Waheeda Rehman, Vyjayantimala, Asha Parekh, Helen, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor among others.
Although Singh is proficient in Bharatnatyam and Kathak, the actress has never attempted Odissi before. “I am every excited and nervous. Odissi is such a beautiful dance, almost divine,” she says.
The chief guest at the concert is veteran actress and celebrated dancer Asha Parekh. The show will also attempt to create a fusion of classical dance with contemporary, foot-tapping numbers.
Commenting on the effort, Asha Nambiar, president, Vaishnovi Kala Kshetra, said: “I believe everyone can benefit from the immense cultural learning that this show will bring. With it, we are attempting to merge the traditional with the new age.”
