Painting a journey

Television actor Aamir Ali gives a tour of his spacious, self-decorated house, explaining the significance of each object and the wall decor.

The paintings and artefacts in television actor Aamir Ali’s house have been sourced from his own décor company, Avant Garde. But the journey to finding the house itself, was not easy. “My mom had been on the lookout for a house for the longest time. She would shortlist the houses and keep me informed about the available flats. When she had shortlisted a few, she goaded me to see them. The moment I entered this house, I got very good vibes, and we chose to buy it,” says Ali.

De-stressing den
The actor lives with his family in a three-bedroom flat in the Greenville building in Andheri, Mumbai. “I live on the 10th floor, which incidentally is also the top floor. The area of the apartment is over a 1000 sq ft. I like living in Andheri because the TV industry is here. And so are friends and family. But at times, the traffic can be killing. On second thoughts, tell me one place in Mumbai where there is no traffic. At the end of the day, it’s worth it, because when I stand by the window, the breeze blowing in my face de-stresses me completely,” he adds. His girlfriend Sanjeeda Sheikh loves the place, but was not involved in doing up the house. “The interiors of the house have been done by a friend, Sheena. I contributed too; for instance, I wanted the living room to be painted white, and with a lot of wooden furniture. For the bedroom, I wanted wooden flooring. I had seen the sofa someplace else, and decided to have one for myself.”

Love for a wall
“I like one particular wall (yeah, I know it sounds funny) in the living room. I call it ‘The Journey’. It depicts through framed photographs my mom’s journey from her birth to her childhood to her married life, to my birth to the way I am today. I still live with my mom and love her to death. The Journey wall was my idea — and she was pleasantly surprised when she saw it.

Bedroom boy
“Strange but true, we end up beautifying people’s houses but we don’t have time to beautify our own abode,” says the actor. His favourite room in the house is his bedroom. “I love to sleep. I also love to eat, but I don’t know how to cook, so the kitchen has been done as per my mom’s specifications. From the size and look of the cabinets to where the cooking range should be placed — everything was as she desired.”

Positive vibes
Ali is not a party animal and doesn’t entertain too many guests at his house. However, during his house-warming party, it was open house for everyone, just as it is, on Eid.

“Alcohol is not permitted in my house and the only time friends come over is to play video games or see a film or for football or cricket matches,” he says. Friends suggested he build a gym at home, but the idea of working out alone does not appeal to him. “My house is imbued with my positivity. People tell me they feel very relaxed when they come over.”
