Growing up in rural Australia, Baz Luhrmann was enthralled by the world of movies and the power of story telling through his father’s movie theatre. His most notable works to date are films like Strictly Ballroom, Romeo & Juliet, Moulin Rouge and Australia. His fascination with India became obvious with Moulin Rouge, in which Nicole Kidman danced to Chamma Chamma (from Rajkumar Santoshi’s China Gate). Now, Luhrmann is looking forward to working with music maestro A R Rahman. And to make the India connection stronger, he recently rode all over Rajasthan on his bike
What would you do if Superman paid you a visit?
I would ask him why he has been slacking so much lately. There are so many things that need fixing.
Your best pick-up line for Angelina Jolie?
Well, even though I know her quite well, still I don’t mind asking her, ‘Can I see your tattoos?’
If you were stranded on a desert island and could keep five things with you, what would you choose?
My family, a good tea cup, a continuous supply of milk and a friend to share stories with. If you could go back in time, which period of history would you go back to and why? I would love to go back to the time of the ancient Greeks and experience the
richness of their culture.
You’re sentimental about…
Love and also I am quite sentimental about my two kids.
If you had to make a comedy, who would you cast?
I feel that more than the cast, it is the story that matters the most. There is no dearth of good actors.
The one show you don’t like to miss on TV?
TV definitely is at its peak today but unfortunately I don’t have any favourite shows.
Your idea of a really boring evening?
I guess spending the evening all by myself.
The turning point of your life?
There have been several in fact. And, right now I can feel another one is about to happen, but I can’t say anything about it now.
The craziest rumour you’ve heard about yourself?
This I read on Wikipedia some time back. It was mentioned that I once cured a little boy suffering from autism. I have never done anything like that.
Your exercise routine?
I don’t have a regular routine but whenever I can, I try to work out for at least 40 minutes.
One thing you love about your partner?
Her style of talking to me remains just the way it was when I first met her.
What do you do in a crisis?
I seem to be bit of a natural with that as I am always in some crisis or the other!
