The moment he clicks his camera, you know he has captured another timeless expression or a wonderful moment. But few know that for celebrity photographer Daboo Ratnani, it all happened by accident.
"My induction in the world of photography came by chance and I guess I was lucky to turn my hobby into a profession. We all know that your hobby cannot earn you bread and butter but it is different in my case," Ratnani told IANS at a talent hunt here.
The hunt was organised by social networking site Ibibo.com, which connects young talent with the industry through initiatives like iFreshFace, iVideoStar and iFashion photographer, among others.
At 37, Ratnani has been a professional photographer for 14 years now and has captured almost everyone from Bollywood, be it Big B riding a Harley Davidson or Kajol sitting with poise on top of a taxi.
Does he make his subject look beautiful, or are they naturally beautiful?
"It is very important for everyone to feel good, only then will you look good. No one is perfect in this world and the trick of photography is to hide flaws and enhance positives of a person," Ratnani explained.
"For me it is a joint effort of both the subject and the photographer to come up with a good picture. Subject should be confident, at ease and comfortable; only then can you get a beautiful picture."
Ratnani's work comprises a blend of film, fashion, advertising, portraits and photo shoots and he is also known for his annual calendar that he launched way back in 1999.
"The calendar idea too happened by accident only, as every New Year I used to get stuck with the idea of what to gift to my friends. So in 1999 I decided to make a calendar and gift it to my friends and clients," he maintained.
"The idea just worked and I got overwhelming response from everyone and they wanted me to do this every year."
This year Ratnani has clicked 48 Bollywood actors for the calendar, instead of 24 as before.
"It is a kind of anniversary issue, so just to make it a bit different from the earlier calendars, I have increased the number of pictures in it. This time there is no theme for the calendar, it has got a bit of everything."
For this year's calendar, the lensman has captured Bollywood actors Katrina Kaif on a horse, Sanjay Dutt in his red Ferrari, Deepika Padukone in a sari and many more.
Initially Ratnani printed 1,000 copies of the calendar but now the number has increased to 5,000. Still, it is not on sale.
"The sole purpose of this calendar is to bring a smile to the faces of my Bollywood friends, clients, and fetch me some more good work."
Who is Ratnani's biggest competitor?
"I am my own competitor. I believe in doing quality work and push myself to that extent where I get new ideas and thoughts to do better work with every passing year."
