With the third season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) just round the corner, this piece of news should make actress Preity Zinta happy. According to the latest compilation of The 50 Most Powerful People in Indian Sports by the Sports Illustrated magazine, Zinta stands as the most powerful woman.
At number 23, she not only makes the cut in a list that’s heavily ‘manned’ by the who’s-who of the sports industry, the Punjab IPL team owner also beats superstar Shah Rukh Khan who’s at 28. The list was topped by cricketer Sachin Tendulkar for the importance he has in the country’s sports fraternity. Even after a 20-year-long career, he still remains the highest tax paying sportsperson in the country. Indian cricket’s current poster-boy, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, is at number five.
Lalit Modi is second on the list for upping Indian cricket’s coffers by millions thanks to the success of the IPL. Liquor baron Vijay Mallya, arguably the most flamboyant man on the list, stands at number three. Tennis player Sania Mirza finishes the list at 50, while Indian sports’ latest pin-up girl, Saina Nehwal, stands at 37.
