Sunny Leone’s popularity seems to be soaring among youngsters. The adult film star who shot into limelight with Bigg Boss 5 and subsequently bagged a role in Mahesh Bhatt’s upcoming Jism 2, is now one of the fore runners to Hindu College’s Damdami Mai. However, the student cabinet has revealed that they may do away with the ritual this year.

“We might give the tradition a miss as we are busy wrapping up Mecca. But if we do go ahead then it will be Leone. The final decision will be taken either on February 13th or 14th,” says Manoj Chahal, Prime Minister of Hindu college’s Cabinet.

As per the Valentine’s Day tradition in DU, students worship a celebrity in an elaborate ceremony. It is believed that one who partakes the prasad of the goddess gets into a relationship and loses his/her virginity soon. Incidently, Leone plays the role of a Delhi University graduate in Jism 2. However, Leone could not be reached for comment.

On February 14, students will put up a picture of Leone on the ‘virgin tree’ in the campus. The tree is grandly done up with balloons and, at times, inflated condoms. The ritual kicks off with a panditji putting ‘tilak’ on the foreheads of the devotees, who then place the picture of the goddess on the tree. A student is nominated every year to become the pandit, usually it is the winner of Mr. Fresher contest.

The pandit offers prayers after which a procession is carried out across the campus. Devotees take part in the procession chanting ‘Dam Dami Mai ki jai’ to the beats of drums. This is done to invoke the blessings of the goddess. At the end of the procession prasad is distributed which is usually a sweet such as laddoo or a batasha.

Though no one knows when it all began, but the tradition has been in vogue for years now. Damadami Mai last year was actor Sonakshi Sinha. Earlier, pictures of Priyanka Chopra, Mallika Sherawat, Aishwarya Rai and Deepika Padukone among others have adorned the virgin tree.
