A simple story of a God-fearing, devout Muslim mechanic named Hashmat Ullah (played by Paresh Rawal), who has been entrusted with the job of repairing an old V8 Ford engine. He does not know the car’s historic significance — it once carried the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi, which were immersed in the holy river Sangam. Hashmat is caught in a complex situation after a powerful bomb explosion rocks his town, leading to the arrest of innocent Muslim youths. A strike to work is called by prominent leaders of the community — portrayed by Om Puri and Pavan Mallhotra — to protest against the police’s unjust treatment of those arrested. Will the mechanic support the protest and abandon the repair of the engine or is he ready to go against the wishes of his community? Thus begins a journey on the
Road to Sangam
, a path of Gandhian values and principles.
