Having begun the year on a high note with two awards, actress Priyanka Chopra now gets set for a unique honour. Come February 14 and the hottie might join the hallowed ranks of sirens worshipped by the Hindu College students in the past.

Priyanka is

Damdami Mai,

the Goddess of Love for this year’s

Damdami Mai Ki Puja

at the college’s Valentine’s Day celebrations. “She makes the perfect choice this year. There are others who want Deepika Padukone and even Sandra Bullock. If there are no changes on 13th eve, then it will be Priyanka,” said Neeraj Hasija, Prime Minister of Hindu College. Given to a beauty who has made the most headlines in the previous year, the whacky honour has so far been given to Aishwarya Rai, Janet Jackson, Anara Gupta and Katrina Kaif.

According to the tradition, male students of the college invoke

Damdami Mai

on the day to seek her blessings to win their love. The ritual is performed under the famous Virgin Tree (also called VT). “The puja is performed by a student dressed as a pandit. The pandit is mostly the Mr Fresher and this year it is Piyush,” said Hasija.

A procession is then carried out across the campus with the pandit carrying a

puja ki thali

and chanting slogans to the beats of drums. The procession culminates at VT, and an aarti progresses amidst slogans such as

‘Damdami Mai ki jai

’. The students then distribute prasad. The bizarre tradition also involves putting a teeka of red chilli powder on the forehead, though the students have done away with the ritual of decorating VT with condom and balloons.

“Noone knows who started it, everyone just follows the ritual,” said Saurabh Chaturvedi, a Hindu College student.
