Saumya Mishra and Shweta Mishra will never forget November 17. It was half past noon when management professional Saumya was celebrating her 24th birthday with friends at Aryan’s, a restaurant right opposite Raj Bhawan, near Hazratganj, in Lucknow. Two of her friends were already in, but seven more called in to say that they were stuck due to a VIP cavalcade. “Suddenly, Rahul Gandhi walked in. Shocking! He was ekdum fair. I could not believe my eyes. He was wearing a white kurta-pyjama,” exclaims Saumya, recalling her big moment. “I said, ‘Hello, sir.’ He replied with a ‘Hello’, and took seat at the table facing mine.”

Gandhi spoke softly to the three men who kept him company for lunch. “What charmed me was how polite he was. When the waiter came, he very gently said, ‘Ek glass paani le aayie (please bring me a glass of water)’. He had no attitude. He then ordered fresh lime soda for himself.” As the cellphone cameras came on, Saumya looked on in awe. “I was so near to him. He is so handsome. And unlike other netas, he wears no gold chains. His smile is amazing. And did I tell you about his eyes? So expressive. You could see his heart through them,” she gushes. “As he started to leave, a waiter, signalling towards me, told Rahul about my birthday. He immediately turned towards me, shook my hand and said, ‘Happy Birthday.’ It was the best birthday of my life.”

Meanwhile, Shweta Mishra, a 34-year-old businesswoman who, too, was in the restaurant at the same hour, says that Gandhi was a true gentleman: “The security guards didn’t want us to disturb him while he was eating. So we requested him for a picture when he was done, and he readily agreed. For all his national fame, he is so friendly and down to earth!”
