Rajinikanth's Lingaa charms BO, gets 2014's highest weekend opening

The film has done exceptionally well in the domestic (Chennai) market. At the US box office too, this Rajini starrer is the second highest Tamil grosser in 2014, inching closer to Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam.

Despite getting a thumbs-down from reviewers, Rajinikanth-starrer Lingaa has raced its way to the box office. The film has become the highest opening weekend grosser at the Chennai box office.

The film has minted Rs 2.70 crore at the Chennai box office over the weekend, becoming highest first weekend earner of the top-five Tamil opening-weekend grossers of 2014. The other Tamil releases in the league include Anjaan, Kochadaiiyaan, Kaththi and Velai Illa Pattathari.

Confirming this, trade analyst and industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai tweeted, " #Lingaa storms Chennai box-office, nets an awesome Rs 2.70 Cr in its opening weekend (Dec 12 -14). 'Plexes rocked."

The film has done exceptionally well in the US box office as well earning $1.205 million, being just behind Kamal Hassan-starrer Vishwaroopam. ATMUS Entertainment which handles the Tamil film distribution in the US tweeted, "#Lingaa USA Saturday $412559, total at $1.205M from 140 scrns. Just $60K to beat combined gross of Vishwaroopam to bcom all time #2 in USA."
