For the past few months, Deepika Padukone has been globetrotting back-to-back, shoot for films. But when she flew back to Mumbai earlier this month, and reached Delhi Belly’s special screening, she made headlines.
The reason: Deepika came face to face with ex-boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor, and immediately it was suggested that the encounter was an awkward one.
“Not at all. In fact, we sat together most of the time during the screening,” smiles the actor, adding that she and Ranbir have reached a stage where they’ve become “very good friends”.
“We have put the past and our relationship behind us. People can say what they want, but the kind of bond we share can’t be taken away by anyone. So there’s no question of awkwardness.”
A couple of weeks ago, Ranbir added a twist to the tale by publicly declaring on Simi Garewal’s talk show: “It would have been more graceful of her (Deepika) to have picked up the phone and spoken to me about it (all the issues) rather than speaking on a public platform.”
Any reaction? “Ranbir has said that to my face too, so it doesn’t matter,” says Deepika with a smile.
“The funny part is that we have moved on in our lives. So when the media and people dig up the past, it feels strange because such things are of no consequence to us.”
At the moment, Deepika is excited about her next release, Aarakshan. She admits that the language in Prakash Jha’s film was challenging for her.
“Although it’s Hindi, the kind of language we have used in the film is very ‘shudh’ (pure). But since Prakashji has an amazing command over it, it made my life easier,” she says.
She also admits to being awe-struck by Amitabh Bachchan, who plays her father in the film.
“I couldn’t believe I was actually working with him. But later, you get used to his aura and he also makes you feel comfortable,” says Deepika.
