Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey touched down in the city at 8.30 am on Monday morning, as part of her first trip to India. She then headed to her new digs at the Taj Mahal Palace And Towers, Colaba, where she was welcomed with a performance by a group of specially-abled boys from the Happy Home And School For The Blind.
“Since she’s a lover of music, we wanted to give her a special melodious welcome. The boys serenaded her with a song called Swagatham, and she was so touched by the performance that she asked for more information on the singers and their school to be sent to her. She even posed for pictures with them,” says a well-placed source.

, Winfrey was then escorted to her room, the Ravi Shankar suite located at the heart of the hotel. “It’s the hotel’s signature suite, featuring the Grammy winner’s personal memorabilia, including photos of the time when George Harrison from The Beatles came to learn how to play the sitar from him at the location,” adds the source. “Oprah has arrived with 24 people, and will be staying at the hotel until tomorrow. She hasn’t made any special dietary requests, though the hotel chefs are anxious to get her to taste authentic Indian food.”
When contacted, Gaurav Pokhariyal, general manager of the hotel, simply said, “It is an honour to welcome Oprah Winfrey to the Taj Mahal Palace.”
