To the world, everything seemed perfect between actor Tom Cruise and his wife Katie Holmes, even a month back. However, a lot of times, what we see is not what it is in reality. Be it societal pressure or simply optimism, often couples stay put in a relationship by overlooking the problems or just keeping them under the wraps of compromise. However, certain things in life cannot be mended, and it’s true not only for regular couples, but even for celebs. Guess that’s what has happened with Cruise and Holmes too, with the latter recently filing a divorce from her husband of six years. We take a look at seven such celebrity couples, whose paradise too came crashing down. Here’s what led to their split and what cue you can take from it to save your own relationship from a similar fate.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes
Reason: The breakup of actors Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes has brought in fresh scrutiny to the former’s ties to the controversial religion, Scientology. Holmes reported feeling personally suffocated in what she called a “claustrophobic” relationship with Cruise. She was deeply concerned about her husband’s commitment to Scientology, especially as it related to the education of his children. Holmes was also very unhappy about Cruise’s apparent lack of interest in her career and thus felt dejected and lonely.

Lesson learnt: One person (usually the male) tries to dominate the relationship and gives priority to his/her needs, views, ideologies and demands while disregarding those of the partner. Over a period of time, the partner will feel suffocated.

Heidi Klum and Seal
Reason: After an almost seven-year relationship filled with grand gestures like vow renewals, exotic getaways and much more, model Heidi Klum and singer Seal revealed in January this year that they’ve ‘grown apart’. According to a source, the couple was forced apart due to competing work commitments.

Lesson learnt: Nowadays, many people are in long distance relationships, which keeps them apart for reasons of work. In spite of understanding each other’s work commitments to a great extent, the couple still goes through emotional turmoil. To prevent your relationship from collapsing, take time out for your loved one, in order to make them feel a part of your life.

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore
Reason: Actor Ashton Kutcher may have cheated in his marriage, but there’s more to the story of his divorce with Demi Moore! A brand new report suggests that Demi suffered a miscarriage last spring, which led to Ashton’s infidelity, as he wanted to have kids of his own real bad.

Lesson learnt: Trauma overwhelms people and has an adverse impact on their emotions and rational thinking. Most of the time, people do not share negative emotions with each other. These emotions go on to erupt like a volcano. It is extremely important to share your negative feelings with your partner, which generates mutual emotional support.

Jennifer Lopez and Mark Anthony
Reason: It has been speculated that reports about singer Jennifer Lopez, 41, going topless for a film could have had something to do with the diva’s much talked about split with singer Marc Anthony. Other sources claim it was actually Anthony’s ‘bad attitude’ and his alleged infidelity that caused the split.

Lesson learnt: In a relationship, if one partner acts dominantly, then the other one tends to become submissive. From the point of view of the submissive partner, the relationship is all about bearing the brunt of the other’s behaviour. The key to a healthy relationship would be to sensitively and assertively communicate your feelings to your partner.

Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp
Reason: Problems set in between actor Johnny Depp and singer Vanessa Paradis when the latter started to feel that she’d sacrificed her career for him, but got nothing in return. Things came to a blow when Vanessa discovered flirty texts from 26-year-old actor Amber Heard on Depp’s mobile, leading to the couple’s separation.

Lesson learnt: As a society, we are becoming quite open and tolerant towards casual flings. However, if one partner does not honour commitment, it makes the other person feel unloved, cheated, enraged and abandoned. One should therefore strive towards keeping the commitment.

Justin Beiber and Selena Gomez
Reason: Teen idol Justin Beiber and girlfriend, actor Selena Gomez, seem to be drifting apart nowadays. They have reportedly broken up multiple times in the last few months. One of the reasons for their many break-ups was that Selena was getting annoyed over Justin’s “immature” look and behaviour.

Lesson learnt: In today’s day and age, there are several young couples who enjoy being in a relationship, but are not ready for the responsibility and maturity to go along with it. If at all you decide to get into a relationship, then you should be mentally prepared to share the burden and responsibility that comes with it.

Katy Perry and Russel Brand
Reason: The Rock of Ages actor Russel Brand filed for divorce from pop star Katy Perry in December 2011. The pair’s marriage imploded because Russell wanted kids and Katy wasn’t ready. But according to Katy, Russell’s refusal to come visit her, while she was on her world tour, was one of the main reasons that their 14-month union ended.

Lesson learnt: In contemporary times, women are becoming passionately invested in their career and derive a sense of self from it. Men need to understand that women are career-oriented nowadays. If you value your partner’s career, they will be happy and will pay more attention to your needs.
