Debutante director Divya Khosla Kumar's debut attempt at direction seems to have failed miserably. The film that targets youth probably doesn't consider them intelligent enough.

Critic's take: Debutante director Divya Khosla Kumar thinks nothing of reducing this veteran epitome of on-screen restraint to bawling, howling, sobbing and sniffling.

That is exactly how the audience is likely to feel like as they watch this pea-brained college campus rumpus that stutters and splutters all the way through to a hopelessly bizarre climax.

Yaariyan seeks to pass off the most putrid and regressive ideas as representative of the thoughts and aspirations of Generation X.

Critic's take: Debutante director Divya Khosla Kumar crafts a completely new recipe for a disaster you didn't see coming.

Yaariyan may be targeted at a young audience but every single teenager who chooses to watch it will be insulting their own intelligence.

Yaariyan, it was claimed, is a college romance. But if you look closely, you will find that it is not one but several college romances put together such as Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar, Main Hoon Na and Ishq Vishk.

Divya Khosla Kumar casts fresh faces on a budget of Rs. 11 crore, swings the camera from Sikkim to Australia and plays in to every stereotype about teens under the sun and I still cannot figure out what the film was about to begin with.

Critic's take: Divya deserves kudos for accepting the challenge of directing freshers in her debut film. The best of storytellers are not afraid of taking risks and Divya seems to be one of those. Her handling of the humorous moments as well as the emotional ones with maturity confirms the fact that she knows the craft well. But one does feel that the writing could've been sharp edged at places.
