Rock On!! 2 has to wait, it’s The 3 Mistakes of My Life for now
Buoyed by two National Awards for Rock On!!, director Abhishek Kapoor is now hoping to turn Chetan Bhagat’s bestselling novel into a commercially viable script.entertainment Updated: Mar 16, 2010 17:21 IST
Actor-turned-director Abhishek Kapoor is a happy man. His Rock On!! has bagged two National Awards
for Best Hindi Film and Best Supporting Actor (Arjun Rampal) and he’s still celebrating. “The euphoria over Rock On!! was so overwhelming that it was hard to get my head together,” he admits.
So when is Part 2 coming, is the obvious query. “I don’t want to rush into a sequel even though I know it is the fashionable and economically intelligent thing to do,” says Kapoor. “Rock On!! was a film made from the heart and I don’t want to exploit it commercially. I do plan to carry the story forward, but it is too premature to talk about the plot or the casting.”
Kapoor right now is busy with a film script that he has been working on for the last year. Buzz is that he is reworking Chetan Bhagat’s The
3 Mistakes Of My Life for Excel Entertainment. He’s tight-lipped on the subject. All he will say is that it’s a big story (the 2008 novel is a bestseller), a topical subject set in Gujarat (the novel unfolds in Ahmedabad), revolves around three friends (Govind, Ishaan and Ali) and their dreams and relationships.
“I’m hoping to crack it, so it lines up beautifully in the next 45 days,” he says.‘Farhan’s the rock star, not me’. He has some faces in mind but insists it’s too early to get into names. Meanwhile, he’s thrilled about Arjun Rampal’s national honour but doesn’t want to take credit for someone else’s glory.
He even refuses to acknowledge his role in turning Farhan Akhtar into an unlikely rock star.
“I liked Farhan’s voice, it’s unusual and husky. I wanted him to sing one of the songs. I asked him to come to the studio for an audition. He came with his guitar and played all the songs. He was meant to be a rock star,” Kapoor smiles.
Since Rock On!! was partly his own story, is he a rock star too? “No way!” he says alarmed. “I’m just a regular guy. Yes, I started out as an actor but then moved to writing and directing because it gave me more control over the medium. Even today, if a good role comes up, I’d
be game, though I have not acted in a long time.”
He, however, admits that Arjun Rampal’s character in Rock On! was derived partly from Sohail Khan’s role in Aryan. “Aryan is very close to my heart even though it took five traumatic years to make and I had to run from pillar to post to release it. A decade has passed since but if I got a chance to remake it I’d make a few changes in the narrative but go with the same cast. I’m proud I made it with Sohail Khan,” he asserts.Meanwhile, the rumour mill has it that Abhishek, who at one time was linked with his heroine, Twinkle Khanna, and more recently Shruti Hasan and Kim Sharma, has a certain special lady in his life. He says somewhat cagily, “No names, it’s somewhat complicated.” Is she an actor, you prod. He retorts with a laugh, “At the end of the day, aren’t we all actors?” Touche!
