Is this the birth of a fashionista? Badminton ace Saina Nehwal was spotted in Mumbai on Saturday sporting an all-new look. The 21-year-old has dyed her hair almost blonde with bold streaks, and was wearing make-up and a chunky bangle.
Her new look, she says, is an attempt to keep up with the times. "In the times we live in, it’s very important to present ourselves well. When there are so many photo shoots and ads, you have to work on your looks. That’s what I’m doing," says Nehwal.
She says she found the time to get a makeover, courtesy an ankle injury in December. "I had free time as I was recovering from my injury at home, so I decided to get experimental. It took me three hours at a salon in Hyderabad to get my hair coloured. I am very happy with the way it has turned out. I’ve tried streaks once before, but this time, it is more visible and brighter."
It’s her mother, Usha Rani, who convinced her to try something different. "My mom always used to shout at me and kept telling me to improve my personality. She is the one who gets all the clothes for me and I just wear them. She is my stylist and I trust her completely."
Nehwal, who will be leaving soon for the All England Championship in Birmingham in March, has been practising for five hours a day with a taped ankle. Being at home and resting was great, but Nehwal says she’s looking forward to hitting the court again. "You know, I like to be on the court and give my best. I want to keep winning. I have to keep winning," she signs off.
