A rare surprise awaited Shabana Azmi as she celebrated her 60th birthday on Saturday. It came in the form of a coffee table book conceived and put together by her Godchild Namrata Goyal, daughter of Jet Airways chairman, Naresh Goyal.
On the occasion, where many from the industry came out to celebrate Azmi’s special day, the book was embellished with memorable instances written by her friends and family.
Shyam Benegal, who gave her a break with Ankur
(1974), wrote about Azmi’s first few days on the shoot. Roshan Taneja, Azmi’s teacher at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), revealed some memories of her during the institute days. Blessings from her mother Shaukat Azmi, a love poem by her husband Javed Akhtar and a note by Tabu, among others, are all part of this memento that also contains letters and rare pictures from close ones.
A picture clicked by her friend and co-actor from Honeymoon Travels Private Limited
(2007), Boman Irani, also forms a part of the book. “During my photography days, I had shot some promotional stills for Deepa Mehta’s Fire
(1996) with Shabana. I took some candid shots of her then. One of the shots in which she looks extremely playful is a part of this book,” says Irani.
A source reveals that most present at the party marvelled at the compilation. Some even asked for a copy. “If Azmi gives a go ahead, there may be a possibility to make copies for friends and make some available for book stores too,” says the source.
