Marathi mulgis Shibani Dandekar and Sagarika Ghatge talk about celebrating Bhau Beej.
What are your plans for Beej this year?
Usually, we go to Pune for Bhau Beej and Diwali. My family and I, along with my aunts always celebrate this day together. As part of our tradition, we put oil on each other’s arms and face, and basically end up just making a big mess. It’s a lot of fun. It’s something we’ve pretty much done every year. Bhau Beej is one of my favourite occasions, because my cousin brother is the only boy in the family, and the rest of us are all girls. So it’s nice to make it all about him. Also, he is the youngest, so that makes it even more fun.
Tell us about a special memory you associate with the occasion.
The one memory I treasure the most is when my mama (mother’s brother) and cousin brothers came down from Ahmedabad. We had a great time. That was the most memorable Bhau Beej for me.
“My younger brother Shivjeet and I share a very special bond. More than being my sibling, he is like my best friend. We are very close and I am very protective of him since I’m the older one. I always lookout for him. I also spoil him a lot. Whenever I’m out shopping, I always make sure I pick up some stuff for him. For Bhai Dooj or Bhau Beej, as we call it in Marathi, we have a small puja at home and then we exchange some presents — unlike the tradition, I always get him a big present.”
