Tinsel town, once again, has raised a wave of concern to defer a celebrity’s life decision. Following tennis player, Sania Mirza’s sudden announcement to marry Pakistani cricketer, Shoaib Malik, actresses Neelakshi Singh and Ananya Das have launched an online signature campaign at www.ghotala.wordpress.com to urge her to rethink her decision.
“In India, she is given the status of a goddess,” says Singh, when asked why she feels Mirza needs the affirmation of the country in order to decide whom she would like to wed. “Sania is an iconic figure in this country, and as a national name, she represents us internationally and thus has some moral responsibility towards all those youngsters who are dying to follow in her footsteps.”
This activity only adds to the likes of bookies betting on whether the marriage will take place or fall through. The website has received over 2,000 signatures within 24 hours of its launch. It will remain active for another five days, after which the initiators will print out the signatures and present them to Sania.
“At no point are we asking her not to get married, all we are saying, is that she should take some time and think about it,” says Singh, who makes it clear that this is merely a request, as they can do nothing beyond that. “There have been serious allegations made towards Shoaib Malik, if he gets charge-sheeted, there is obviously no question of a marriage, but if he doesn’t we will present her the signatures. As Indians, we do not want her to be associated with any such thing.”
