The combination of Bollywood and cricket is driving the audience crazy at the Ferozshah Kotla Stadium. Hindi film songs accompany the action during the IPL matches, with every cover drive, six and a wicket celebrated with a chartbuster.
Helping the spectators break into a jig every time the Delhi team scores well is DJ Monty. The official DJ for the Delhi Daredevils team, he belts out hits through the match and keeps the crowd entertained. “The atmosphere in the stadium is electrifying. I never expected it would be so much fun, even while the cricketers are fighting it out on the pitch. The noise, the claps, the cheers — it’s hard not to be a part of the hysteria,” he says.
The 25-year-old says he loves to complement the crowd’s mood. “No words can explain the feeling when the crowd responds to a song you play. It’s like you’re trying to put words to their emotions,” he says. Monty says the selection of songs is impromptu and depends on the situation in the match. “The music played has to be in sync with the mood. Fans, too, request for mega hits and I love to play it for them. This way you connect with fans instantly.”
Monty says there are certain guidelines laid down by the organisers. “Like we aren’t supposed to play ‘cheap’ tracks, and have to take care of both the teams.” Besides Bollywood hits, English tracks such as All Rise and We Will Rock You, also figure on Monty’s playlist.
