Sania Mirza in her bridal finery and her mother’s 25-year-old red sari made a pretty picture at her nikaah with cricketer Shoaib Malik on Monday. But designers and stylists say the tennis star could have looked better on her big day. "It was a sweet gesture to wear her mother’s wedding sari. But the neckpiece wasn’t in sync with the gold work on her sari. Sania has a thing for loud make-up. It was no different at her nikah," says designer Nida Mahmood.
“The sari could have been draped better and the dupatta could have been done interestingly to enhance the overall look. And the golden clutch that Sania carried was so avoidable,” says designer Shaina NC. “The clutch was simply not happening. Even her jewellery — the neckpiece and the maang teeka — weren’t in sync and it all looked like a hurried job,” says celebrity stylist Ambika Pillai.
Sania’s loud red make-up seems to have garnered a big thumbs down too. Pillai adds, “When it comes to make-up, less is more for Sania. It was a day function and too much make-up looks garish.” Designer Rina Dhaka, too says, a simpler look would have worked better. “Sania is a pretty girl and a ‘natural’ look would have gone well,” she says. Designer Ritu Beri agrees, “Sania looked great. But better co-ordinated jewellery and lighter make up would have made her look more stunning.” Make up artist Mickey Contractor says, “Softer make up would have gone well. Her eyes looked too strong.”
