Sunny Leone is a real sweetheart: Russell Peters

There is not much difference between the stand-up comedian who has people in splits with his one-liners, and the real man that Russell Peters is.

Even when behind the scenes, the Indian-origin Canadian cracks jokes at the drop of a hat and is definitely not the type who minds being asked awkward questions. Asked about the rumours of him having dated adult-film star turned Bollywood actor Sunny Leone, the 43-year-old says, “Yes, we did date each other. It was five-and-a-half-years ago. It was a wonderful time. She’s a real sweetheart, you know.”

He performed in NCR on Friday to a gathering of 4,500, and ended with a joke on his father’s English accent. But Peters, who got much flak for calling Aishwarya Rai Bachchan a ‘bad actor’ during his 2011 performance in Delhi, says the criticism doesn’t bother him much.

“I honestly don’t care. I think it (the reaction) was a bit exaggerated too. It was just like a pat on the shoulder and the reaction was like, ‘oh my God! You just hit me!’ But seriously, it doesn’t bother me,” he says.

Indians, Peters says, are finally beginning to get the hang of the comedy scene. “Indians are still new (to stand-up comedy) but they are getting to the art of it. I have seen only Papa CJ’s act and I think he did a great job. We sure have a sense of humour — so many people gathered for my show today. That shows a lot,” he says.
