They were the pin-ups for PDA and the hope that love can come to you at any age. Even controversies seemingly failed to stick to this Teflon couple - Shashi and Sunanda Tharoor.

And then all of a sudden, their marriage imploded. Two days after Sunanda took to Twitter and accused Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar of "stalking" her husband and trying to end her marriage, she was dead.

As investigation into her death continues, it is hard not to draw parallels with many other celebrity marriages or alliances that got buried beneath their own baggage and ended tragically.

Geeta-Guru Dutt
Geeta and Guru Dutt married for love but didn't get to live happily ever after. Geeta was an established singer who married a struggling director. Both hit the bottle and things became much worse after Geeta became suspicious that Guru was having an affair with actorWaheeda Rehman. She left her husband in 1963 and he attempted suicide. Guru Dutt survived that time but they had their last fight on a night in 1964. Next day, Guru Dutt was found dead after having a cocktail of alcohol and sleeping pills.

A film still which features Waheeda Rehman and Guru Dutt.

Marilyn Monroe
More than half a century after Hollywood's golden girl Marilyn Monroe died, the speculation about her life and death continue. Last year, files emerged shedding new light on her last night alive and her relationships with US President John F Kennedy and his younger brother Bobby. Fred Otash, a notorious private detective, had wired Monroe's house and found out that she had a sexual relationship with the brothers and complained about being 'passed around like a piece of meat' hours before her death. She was found lying naked in her bed in 1962 with an empty bottle of Nembutal sleeping pills by her side.

Diana and Charles on their wedding day.

Lady Di-Prince Charles
Diana and married the Prince of Wales in a fairytale ceremony at St Paul's Cathedral in 1981.But their marriage was anything but a fairytale. Prince Charles' long-running relationship with Camilla Parker-Bowles exerted a strain on his marriage. Diana herself said in an interview,"There were three people in this marriage from the start." Her relationship with the rest of thefamily eventually deteriorated and the couple separated in 1993. Diana lurched from one bad relationship to another and died in a car crash while trying to avoid paparazzi in 1997.

Tiger Woods- Elin Nordegren
Woods was considered the greatest golfer of all time till the Thanksgiving of 2009. It turned out he was a serial philanderer. When his wife Elin Nordegren found out, she threw a mobile phone, pummeled him and chased him with a golf club. The neighbours found Woods car smashed and him on the ground covered in blood. In time, Woods confessed to sleeping with 120 women. He entered sex rehab, lost his world ranking and endorsements, Erin filed for divorce after his girlfriend no. 15 was revealed - daughter of their next-door neighbor who met Woods when she was only 14.

Francois Hollande-Valerie Trierweiler

Recently when a magazine published the pictures of French president Francois Hollande going off on a scooter to meet his actor girlfriend Julie Gayet (while his present girlfriend was at home), the French shrugged it off as a 'private affair'. However, it landed Valerie Trierweiler, the woman who is regarded as France's first lady, in hospital. According to the magazine Le Point, a friend of Trierweiler said she was in hospital having taken "one pill too many" the night Hollande confirmed the affair in a "cold and implacable" manner. Le Point quashed the idea that Trierweiler had tried to commit suicide.
