Gautam Rode loves his life right now. Having a popular show like Saraswatichandra under his belt keeps him in the public eye. But that’s not all. He is also enjoying his stint as a host on the celebrity dance reality show Nach Baliye. Also, last week (on November 28), he was trending on Twitter — a bonus he didn’t see coming.
However, that does not mean Gautam hasn’t seen his share of lows. He started off with TV, and then tried his luck in films only to
eventually return to the tube. But today, the actor is overwhelmed with the love of his fans and is glad that he’s finally getting his due.
How do you look back at your career, which until recently, didn’t see too many highs?
I’ve done everything possible — ads, television, films, music videos and theatre. I’ve learnt that in life, what comes to you will only come when it has to. You will get your due if you are focused and work hard. So maybe this is my time. Also, this is just the beginning and I have a lot more to achieve. People have started recognising me as an actor, which feels good.
At 36, do you feel you have got your due?
I do, because today, people recognise me and my talent. But there’s much more I want to do in life. I feel happy when people talk about my acting rather than just praising my looks. I’m not 21-22 to be excited about such things. Also, it’s not like you have to achieve more at 36 than you could at 25. You can’t force things to happen to you. You’ve got to be patient and improve yourself.
Are you looking at films again?
I’d love to, but because I’m working 30 days a month with two shows, people know I don’t have the time. And I’m not one of those actors who’ll boast about offers they aren’t taking up. TV has put me in the limelight again, so in the future if movies happen, I’d love to do them too. Earlier when I did films, maybe I wasn’t as ready as an actor and only had good looks going for me. Today I feel more confident to take up any role.
You’ve been single for four years, is there pressure from your parents to get married?
Mom keeps asking about marriage, but I need to find the right person first. I work round the clock. I don’t have time to socialise, so how will I find anyone? I’m open to anything, but nothing’s happening right now.
Quick FiveA question you have been asked numerous times?
Jennifer Winget, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Gautam Rode for Sarwatichandra.
People ask me if I apply lipstick as I have very pink lips. I can’t help it, they are natural. (laughs) A show you like on TV ?
Diya Aur Baati Hum; it is the number one show on television right now. An actor you feel is popular?
Ronit Roy. He’s doing so well and he has maintained himself. He’s aged gracefully too. A habit you dislike?
I would want to stop thinking so much. What subjects would you like to see on TV?
I would like to see more real life stories that inspire people.
