A major fire gutted the sets of a popular television show in Filmcity, Goregaon (East), around 8.30am on Wednesday.
Although there were no causalities, it took four fire engines more than four hours to douse the flames.
Four water tankers and an ambulance also rushed to the spot to help with rescue operations.
Officials said they were investigating the cause of the fire that destroyed most of the equipment on the sets of TV show Comedy Nights with Kapil.
According to sources, a curtain caught fire because of a short circuit following which the flames spread.
“The damage includes wooden furniture, cameras, sound equipment, trolleys and air conditioners, among things. The investigation report will be submitted soon,” said a senior fire officer at the spot.
“The set is completely gone. There is nothing left – the sets, the dressing rooms, costumes, lights, sound recording equipment worth crores — everything has been reduced to ashes. Thankfully, there were no people present there when the fire broke out, so no one got hurt,” said Kapil Sharma, the host of the show.
“When I first read a tweet about a fire on the sets, I thought it was a rumour,” said the standup comedian, who had just returned from Kolkata and was scheduled to shoot for an episode at 2pm.
The crew now plans to build makeshift sets for shoots.
Raj Nayak, CEO of Colors channel, which airs the show, also rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.
According to sources, losses incurred might run into crores. “We did not expect the damage to be so much,” said Nayak.
In a statement to the media, the channel’s spokesperson said, “It is unfortunate that such an incident has taken place. We are in the process of accessing the extent of the damage. Meanwhile, we are trying to resume shooting for the show so that schedules are not disrupted.”
