Actor and comedian Sunil Grover says that the whole hype around his exit as Gutthi from Kapil Sharma’s comedy show has taught him a lot in life, and made him wiser.

"I grew a lot and matured as a person after leaving Kapil’s show and all the speculations that followed. I understood how, what you say, can be interpreted to give a different meaning ... aur baat kahan se kahan pohouch sakti hai," said the 36-year-old during his recent visit to HT City, which was peppered with one-liners that left us in splits.

Grover, who has appeared in several Bollywood films apart from his stint as a standup comedian, became a household name with his character Gutthi in a comedy show, and later hit headlines when he quit the show in November last year.

Grover also rubished rumours of rivalry with Kapil being the reason of his exit, but agreed that money was one of the factors. “So, when it came to renewing the contract, I didn’t want to."

Even as he’s winning hearts as the ‘pretty young thing’ on TV, in real life too, actor Sunil Grover says he’s got into the habit of shopping for all that a man wouldn’t ever dream of! "Pehle woh ladies garments wale shops ko main ignore marke chalta tha… abhi ruk kar dekhne lag jata hoon ki yeh bhi toh print achha hai!” said Grover on a recent visit to the HT City office, making the team burst into peals of laughter.

Grover also says in jest that nowadays women treat him like a saheli (female friend). But ask him if his wife also treats him as a saheli, and he jokes, "She is only interested in my pay cheque."

No matter what you ask him, this 36-year-old comedian can leave you in splits. So, when asked about how his journey from his ancestral village in Haryana to Mumbai’s stardom, he replied with a straight face, “by train”.

Grover hit headlines when he walked out of a TV show, hosted by comedian Kapil Sharma, that made him popular as Gutthi. Later, the channel that aired the show announced they had the copyright to Gutthi. But was he was the one who created and conceptualised Gutthi?

"I wouldn’t say I ‘created’ it, but, yes, I did develop it... Gutthi was a reflection of my experiences, my observations of various women that I saw and met in my life,” says Grover, who has moved on from that and will now be seen playing Chutki in the upcoming show, Mad in India, on Star Plus.

Finally, ask the funny man, what does he do when he himself needs a laugh, and he jokes, "I just look into the mirror."
