On the face of it, this seems like the mother of all reality shows. Come 2014 and a new television show will invite people to compete for a seat on business tycoon Richard Branson’s tourist flight to space.
The Indian version of upcoming American TV show Space Race will chronicle the struggle of 16 competitors vying for the coveted spot on the spacecraft.
Interestingly, the rights to the show, created by LA-based TV producer Mark Burnett (of Survivor and The Apprentice fame), have been acquired by a Mumbai-based production house for the Indian market. "Yes, we have acquired the rights for an Indian version. We got it last month (in October)," says Akash Sharma, co-founder and managing director, Bulldog Media & Entertainment.
However, he doesn’t divulge any details, "It’s too early to talk about other details, but it will, in all likelihood, start airing sometime next year. As of now, we haven’t even decided on the channel (that will air the Indian version)."
In addition to this show, another media conglomerate, in association with a Dutch broadcaster, has reportedly announced a new series called Milky Way Mission that will be sending celebrities to outer space.
