Her debut tele film, an adaptation of poet  Amrita Pritam’s story, Karma Wali, took her to the Cannes film fest, back in the 90s. And then, there was no looking back for Lavlin Thadani.

With a huge repertoire of issue-based films to her credit, the filmmaker is back to the small screen, this time with a tele series based on noted scholar and patriot, Bharat Ratna Abul Kalam Azad. Lavlin now wants Bollywood actor-filmmaker Aamir Khan and Maulana Azad’s great grand nephew to launch the show.

“We have written to Aamir, but there hasn’t been any response from his side, so far. We are really hopeful that he introduces this show because he indeed is one of the true descendants of Maulana Azad. Also, if a personality like him launches it, the show’s reach and popularity will increase and Maulana Azad’s story is something we really want everybody to know... his was a truly inspiring life,” says the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, graduate, who researched for more than two years before making this show for Doordarshan.

“Apart from consulting Maulana Azad’s book, Ghubhar-i-Khatir (that he wrote while in the jail), we met his descendants... and we met them through scholars because if we would have approached them as filmmakers, there would have been a risk of the wrong people claiming his lineage,” says Lavlin, adding that she will be happy to give her research pieces to Aamir, who’s also long been planning to make a film on Maulana Azad.

The TV drama, which will show the life of Maulana Azad right from his birth to his last breath, will see popular actor Aamir Bashir play the titular role. “We were looking for someone with a throaty voice and who can speak good Urdu, so Aamir was apt,” says Lavlin.
