Ten years after

It’s been raining Bollywood in London these days. While the unit of London Dreams has packed bags and returned to Mumbai after a month-long shooting stint, the Mayfair Media Club extended a warm welcome to Farah Khan.

The occasion for a sofa-style interview was for the lady to talk about her life and work, which ranges from Main Hoon Na to Om Shanti Om, and choreography for some memorable Bolly flicks, international features and credits for Vanity Fair, Monsoon Wedding, Bombay Dreams and the Shakira music video.

Coffee.. muffins.. chat
Like always, it was good to have coffee and muffins with two favourites, Karan Johar and Manish Malhotra, who were en route to Mumbai from Los Angeles. Karan had broken his journey in London for a conference to mark 10 years of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and concurrently plug his plush looking Dostana.

The release of Kuch Kuch.. has as many fond memories for me as it does for K Jo. In my second year at Sydenham, I started on my career in the world of media and entertainment.

It’s been an eventful journey but I’m going to take a leaf out of Karan’s encyclopedia and not get entwined in nostalgia. “I recreate nostalgia on celluloid but it’s not for me in real life,” he said. “I’d much rather look forward and create new memories to cherish.”

So here’s to another decade of Kuch Kuch.. and to another decade in an industry that’s given me some of my best tragedies and successes.

Material Girl, literally
The biggest showbiz news these days is the Madonna — Guy Ritchie divorce. With a high-profile split comes some real dirty linen washing in public. This isn’t a man being biased but my heart goes out to Guy.

The night after she split, Madge went on stage in Boston and called the natural father to one of her children, father to their adopted son and stepfather to another child, an “emotional retard”.

Her friends have even been planting stories about Guy living off her multi-million dollar bank account. After doing all this, she has the nerve to grumble about the bad press that people have been giving her.

A woman who cynically and assiduously promoted herself as a role model for independent modern women for over two decades, has, in fact, had a hugely detrimental effect on the values of those same women. She paraded herself as a devoted wife and yet glorified casual sex though the most damaging of all is the example she has set as a mother — just look at the lasting harm done to her three children!

Instead of putting the kids through a tacky circus, I wish she would shut up, get some dignity, a divorce, and then get on to the next poor sap!
