An 18 year old girl wanted to know about abortion. She was unsure about her pregnancy but was certain that she had unprotected sex with her neighbor. She was not sure about her menses dates.I referred her to a gynecologist. Her mother too was involved into the entire process.
The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act (MTP) allows for termination of pregnancy with the consent of the mother. The first 12 weeks of pregnancy are considered as relatively easier period for aborting the foetus. During this period, the opinion of one gynecologist is sufficient for the termination of pregnancy.
The abortion can be tried by medical or surgical means, as deemed fit by the doctor. The Indian law allows abortion as late as 20 weeks when two competent doctors certify that MTP is warranted. She was explained about contraceptives in detail too.
