This time of the year is very special for me, there is that certain crispness in the air, an excitement to everything and an inner anticipation of new things to look forward too, a time to give in to indulgences and make new resolutions. It is also a time for some major family bonding, no matter where we are, the family puts aside their busy schedules to get together at Christmas time, it’s been a ritual we follow every year no matter what.
This time of the year you also look forward to the tradition of giving gifts. The planning starts months in advance, the lists are made and remade and the final days leading up to Christmas. It is like a photo finish to the 25th morning, when the kids and adults eagerly look forward to opening that pile of gifts under the tree beautifully wrapped and colour coded. It’s just the anticipation of it all that is so intriguing, more than the gifts in itself. The joy and happiness on everyone’s face and the satisfaction of being a part of this sharing.
The warm funny feeling that makes our heart feel larger than ever is essentially the joy that comes from giving, the act of doing something for someone that will bring joy and happiness in their lives. The joy of giving is not just in giving material gifts but is also in sharing the skills and knowledge we possess, it’s imparting the talent we have, so that it’ll benefit others as well. The joy in returning back to society, in using our capabilities to help someone else do better in their lives. The act of giving wholeheartedly without expecting anything in return, makes you feel more valued than any precious thing in the world.
In our everyday lives, not just at Christmas time, it is important to find opportunities to give something to someone. Maybe it’s just a smile, a hug or a helping hand or someone simply wants to be heard. Reaching out to another is an act of giving. It may involve stepping out of our comfort zone and going the extra mile, but giving is one of the best ways to share our blessed lives. The satisfaction in seeing someone smile, the knowledge that you have enriched someone’s life is very gratifying.
It may take a little more of our time, a little bit of sacrifice but the joy in giving is much more than receiving. Giving should be with a free heart and mind, unconditionally and wholeheartedly. It is what creates the balance in life. Make giving a part of your life, what are you waiting for? Do you have someone to reach out to today?
