Boxing knocked out cricket on the netosphere, at least on this one day. As the Delhi IPL team lost to Mumbai on Wednesday, six Indian boxers were busy throwing punches, each of them picking a gold at the Commonwealth Boxing Championship.

“While everybody is down with IPL fever, the Indian boxers won 6 gold medals…Remarkable performance. India, think beyond cricket,” posted Vinesh Patel on Twitter. Olympian Vijender Singh was especially talked about. “Vijender can give the hottest of cricketers a run for their money,” posted Priya Sharma, writer, on Facebook.

Boxing is the buzzword among youngsters in the Capital, too. “I watched DD (Doordarshan) after the longest time. The Indian boxers kicked ass in the ring…It was awesome,” says MA student Mukesh Adhikary. “Vijender’s nose was bleeding, and he still managed to win. His performance was so inspiring,” says Sidharth Verma, blogger.

The crowd was in full support at the venue as well, with the 2,700-capacity Talkatora stadium jam packed, and spectators cheering almost every move the Indian boxers made. Vijender, too, thanked the ‘supportive’ crowd for making ‘the moment all the more special’.
