It was the year of break-ups and make-ups, flops and fights, but the most important part of 2010 in tinsel town was a little blue birdie. Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Lata Mangeshkar, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan — almost every big star, singer, film-maker signed on and got heard. Even actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan gave it a shot via hubby Abhishek’s account.
As the year comes to a close, we take a look at the top ten Bollywood celebs with the highest number of followers — and what makes them special.
1) Priyanka Chopra
No. of followers: 7,65,359
Priyanka was among the first Bollywood stars to get on the Twitter bandwagon, and overtime she has remained the most consistent as well. With the highest number of followers among tinsel-towners, Priyanka keeps her tweets interesting and interactive — posting pictures from shoots and witty repartee.
2) Shah Rukh Khan
No. of followers: 7,40,069
Within hours of signing up on Twitter, early 2010, SRK had thousands of followers. The actor actually shared a slice of his life with fans — he not only wrote about his films but also about his children and family. One of his memorable tweets was in August, when he uploaded pictures of himself with children, Aryan and Suhana, donning henna tattoos.
3) Salman Khan
No. of followers: 5,29, 876
Salman’s devil-may-care attitude shone through even in his 140 characters updates. Convoluted spellings and an unconventional language which is a mix of sms shorthand, Mumbaiyya Hindi and good old English made his tweets stand apart. But, it hasn’t been smooth sailing. A couple of months ago, when the actor found himself in the midst of a controversy, he threatened to quit Twitter forever. Not that he did, of course.
4) Amitabh Bachchan
No. of followers: 5,53,796
Amitabh Bachchan has been on Twitter for 223 days. We haven’t been counting, we know this because before every tweet Big B writes the number of days he’s been on the social networking site. Though the blog he maintains, is still more popular than his Twitter account, he is consistently active — and besides soccer and cinema, he has also been writing about shooting and social topics.
5) Deepika Padukone
No. of followers: 4,85,845
Deepika’s updates are about her whereabouts and rarely a peak into her life. Her tweets made headlines twice — both times in September. When beau Siddharth Mallya asked her to bake him a cake, and she said, “bring home the champions league trophy and I’ll bake a cake for u and ur team!” She also wished ex-beau Ranbir Kapoor happy birthday, a few days after suggesting in an inter-view that he cheated on her.
6) Hrithik Roshan
No. of followers: 4,76,105
Hrithik follows 34 people, including wife Sussanne and his ‘close friend’ and Kites co-star Barbara Mori. His tweets are usually slice of life — his illness, struggle to quit smoking, work on Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Last month, he uploaded a picture (with Rakesh Roshan, SRK and Salman) from 19XX, when he was helping his dad on the sets of Karan Arjun.
7) Preity Zinta
No. of followers: 4,65,047
Actor Preity Zinta may
be missing in action on
the big screen, but her presence in Twitterverse is something that did
not go unnoticed. A regular writer, Preity updated enthusiasitically during the Indian Premier League matches earlier this year. In recent times, she’s been tweeting about her IPL team, King XI Punjab, and the ongoing court case.
8) Aamir Khan
No. of followers: 4,38,926
When actor Aamir Khan signed on to Twitter in June this year, he made no secret of the fact that he wasn’t a fan of the medium. The actor
came on board at the insistence of actor Amitabh Bachchan and has since been largely inactive. With only 164 tweets in the past six months, Aamir’s number of followers also failed to increase.
No. of followers: 4,26,256
Now here’s someone who’s enjoying Twitter! The actor chats with fans, cracks jokes and has quirky conversations with other stars online. One of his most-talked-about comments was when he hit back at ad man Prahlad Kakkar saying that Kakkar should be a comedian. Kakkar had earlier said that Abhi should be in the Guinness Book of Records for standing strong despite 17 flops.
10) Karan Johar
No. of followers: 3,78,147
Once upon a time he was a self confessed Twitter addict, now KJo has embraced radio silence. He is perhaps the only star being followed by pretty much every Bollywood star on Twitter, but Karan’s no longer interested. His romance with the medium began to fade when fans began prodding him with uncomfortable questions about his sexual orientation and such.
