‘We are superstars now’

Meet Shaleen (Sugandha Garg), Boms (Alishka Varde), Rotlu (Karan Makhija) and Jiggy (Nirav Mehta), as they come together again, five months after the release of the hep campus caper, Jaane Tu.. Ya Jaane Na. Nikhil Taneja transcribes their crackling chemistry.

It took one week to hunt down the cell numbers, four days to coordinate a time and place, one failed meeting where one of them didn’t turn up, and a whole lot of confusion.. before the four wacky youngsters came together at 10:30 in the night, for the first time after their movie hit the screens.

The 30 minute chat turned into a two-and-a-half hour blah fest, where the “G4” (as Karan put it) laughed, talked, gossiped, and laughed some more amidst the cosy interiors of Alishka’s stunning Versova home, with the same zany zip that put a smile on our faces the first time round..

How has life been after

Jaane Tu

..

Ya Jaane Na?

Karan:

Dude, there are only four superstars in the industry now.

Alishka:

(Laughs) Yeah, we are superstars now!

Sugandha:

Rotlu was fatter in the film.. now he’s hot and skinny.

Karan:

Okay seriously, I have actually been losing weight and staving off calls which say, ‘Sir,

ek

hero

ke dost ka

role

hai’

. I’m also writing screenplays and waiting for my next role. I want to do theatre but no one casts me because they think I’m doing films.

Alishka:

I’m a wedding planner but for the past six months, I’ve been planning my own wedding. (Smiles) I’m getting married this March.

Nirav:

I was pursuing BBA and acting in plays as well. I always wanted to act.. and

Jaane Tu..

made it easier. I’m doing two movies now. (Grins) Apart from that, I’ve been getting a lot of anonymous calls.

Karan:

Tune hi apna

number

diya hoga

! I haven’t been getting any anonymous calls!

Nirav:

That’s because you were “fatter in the film”.

Sugandha:

I was presenting a show for BBC before and now, I just want to do films. I’ve been signed for Pooja Shetty’s untitled comedy and Karan Johar’s

My Name is Khan.

Have the characters become your identity now?

Sugandha:

The characters were never caricaturish.. so though people recognise us for them, there is no fear of getting stuck with them.

Nirav:

I’ve received many calls where people say, ‘You don’t have to do anything.. just be Jiggy’. That’s precisely what I don’t want to do. But people have accepted us.. there are even fan clubs on Facebook.

Karan:

(Laughs)

Tune apne aap khola hai na

fan club?

Alishka:

I’m getting ‘sister’ roles. I looked very different in the film, so people don’t recognise me much. Whenever they do, they ask me to do that one step I did in the Pappu dance.

Sugandha:

They play it everywhere I go! If I hear that song one more time, I’m going to hit the DJ!

Karan:

Yeah, whenever I go to a shaadi, they ask me to do the Pappu dance. I don’t even know what it is.

Sugandha:

Oh, so you’ve started performing in

shaadis

also?

Karan:

Kisi dost ki shaadi mein

! Besides, if Bollywood superstars can do it, why can’t I?

What were your first impressions about each other? How have they changed since?

Sugandha:

I loved Mac (Karan).. he is very intelligent and insightful. He’s a riot! Alishka is supremely cute. Nirav had long hair.. he would brood so much, I thought he’s a star kid.. but he’s a great actor.

Karan:

When I first met Nirav, I thought he was a really talented guy. (Laughs) And then, it changed. Alishka.. (Sighs) is so sweet. And Sugandha.. she’s so threatening in a room! She can envelope the entire room with her presence.

Nirav:

I met everyone at one go at our acting workshop. I immediately knew we were going to have a blast. Alishka was shy and coy..

Karan:

(Cuts in) Now she laughs more.

Nirav:

Karan hasn’t changed a bit.. he still keeps interrupting. But he’s quite well read. I first thought Sugandha was a teenager. I later found out that she’s married.

Alishka:

I don’t remember what I thought about them but I like them all for different reasons.

What is the most irritating thing about each other?
Karan:

Alishka was very nonchalant during rehearsals. I’d tell her to help rehearse and she’d say, ‘

Ho jayega

!’ Nirav says everything

ghuma-phira ke

. And I’m scared of Sugandha.. she would cut my logic each time!

Sugandha:

That’s what I found irritating about Karan. He puts too much logic into everything. But he created history once.. he slept during a shot!

Karan:

(Laughs) Abbas (Tyrewala) didn’t say cut for half a minute. He thought I was improvising and was in the middle of doing something brilliant. He realised later that I had slept while the camera was rolling.

Sugandha:

As for Alishka, don’t ever take a ride with her. She’s a split personality in a car.. it gives you trauma! There were several occasions when Nirav and I didn’t connect. But that was because of the age gap. What are you now, 18 right?

Nirav:

Fourteen and a half actually. I was 12 during the shoot. Anyway, I didn’t find anything irritating about them.

Karan:

(Cuts in) Don’t lie.. you hate it when I interrupt like this.

Nirav:

No, it’s your habit. I have always seen everyone’s good sides.

Sugandha:

(Laughs)

Waah, ladka taiyyar ho gaya hai

Bollywood

ke liye

.

Alishka:

The most irritating thing about Nirav is his height. He’s too tall! Sugandha and I got along really well. With Karan, I just didn’t get most of his conversations.

Karan:

(Laughs) That’s called typecasting.. she was always in character.

During the shooting, did you ever have crushes on each other?

Sugandha:

(Incredulously) Crushes?

Karan:

(More incredulously) On each other?

Sugandha:

(Laughs) Having a crush on Nirav would mean paedophilia! I might have had a slight one on Alishka though. And I think, at one point, Nirav and Mac got along too well.

Alishka:

The only romance on the sets was between Abbas and Pakhi (Tyrewala).

How was your equation with Imran Khan, Genelia D’Souza and Prateik Babbar?

Karan:

Genelia is the hardest working professional I know. She would always be the first on set. Imran is a stickler for perfection. It runs in the family, I guess. Prateik is adorable.

Nirav:

The kind of hype that came with Imran and Genelia didn’t affect them at all. There were times when Imran would walk up to me and fix my accessories. As for Prateik, we’ve become really good friends after the movie’s release. I’m even doing a movie with him.

Alishka:

Imran is sweet.. he would always be doing a modesty check on the girls. If any part of our clothes wasn’t where it was supposed to be, he’d immediately tell us to cover up.

Sugandha:

Imran is wacky, animated and great fun. There were times when Genelia would go give a shot in the middle of dinner and then come back and finish eating. And Prateik.. you know, I get three-four calls every week asking for his number?

What’s the one thing you took back from the movie?
Nirav:

Do good cinema man, you’ll never regret it. We can be choosy about our next projects thanks to it.

Karan:

As an actor, I learnt that while in theatre, the entire play rests on you, in movies, you are a small part of a bigger vision.

Sugandha:

I’ve learnt to be patient. Even if you have to wait for eight hours in a vanity van.. what about the spot boy who is working for 20 hours? You may be irritated, but it’s not about you.. it’s about the movie.

Alishka:

Thanks to the movie, I learnt that there’s nothing I can’t do. I never wanted to be an actress. So to be able to be a part of an actual Hindi feature film.. I think I can pretty much do whatever I want to do in life now.. which is cool!

(Everyone claps.. and shout

waah waahs

)

Nirav:

Jaane Tu..

is a great chapter in our lives that is going to be read very often and very fondly. So no matter what we are up to, we’ll always hold a special place in each other’s hearts.
