Born to an Indian father and Chinese mother, Jwala Gutta is one of India’s top woman badminton players. A seven-time winner of the National Badminton Doubles Championship, Jwala has also won the National Badminton Championship three times and is an Arjuna Awardee too. With her partner, Ashwini Ponappa, Jwala makes one of the deadliest doubles pair on the Indian badminton court

One word that describes you best?

If a traffic constable hauled you up, what would you do?
I would just smile.

What makes you feel sexy?
A saree.

The colour ‘pink’ for you is...
...Very cute and girly. I love it.

A place where you would like to be lost for a month?
It would be in Edinburgh. It is a beautiful city.

The weirdest thing that went into your mouth?
It happened in Japan. I thought it was chocolate, but it was a cockroach dipped in chocolate!

What did you do with your first pay cheque?
I gave it to my dad.

You are late for work and all the roads are jammed. Choose a mode of transport: a cycle, a horse or a skateboard. Why?
A cycle, as that’s the only one I’m familiar with.

If you could have chosen your own name, what would you have chosen?

I am extremely pleased with my name so I’d stick to it.jwala
