From unknown to $6lakh-man in 20 minutes — meet the man Preity and Juhi fought over.
It was high drama at the IPL auction in Jaipur on Friday. In the middle of the drama were two big Bollywood stars, Preity Zinta and Juhi Chawla, who locked horns for 20 minutes, battling it out over a complete unknown — 25-year-old Bangladeshi bowler Mushrafe Mortaza.
Juhi, who was bidding for the Kolkata IPL team in Shah Rukh Khan’s absence, bid first at the base price of $50,000. Mohali team owner Preity pitched in aggressively in what turned out to be a high stakes war between two. After an intense round of bidding, with the actresses outbidding each other constantly in the longest auction of players at the IPL yet, Mortaza went for 12 times his base price at $600,000.
The strategy behind snapping Mortaza up, is believed to be an attempt to increase the catchment area of Kolkata’s team to neighbouring areas like Bangladesh, experts said.
Talking to the media after the auction, a delighted Mortaza said, “I am the happiest man in the world today”.
